Theodore Augustus Mahowald

June 21, 1930 — November 6, 2021

Dr. Theodore Augustus Mahowald, b 6/21/1930, d 11/6/2021 has passed to a better place, having completed his life's work. Born in St. Cloud, MN, one of seven children of Dr. Alois Mahowald and Cecilia Maus Mahowald, the only one born in a hospital. Theodore was the oldest son, and became very active during his high school years as a bee keeper, with as many as 100 hives. His younger brothers helped him considerably in processing and selling the honey throughout central Minnesota. Theodore graduated from Albany High School and attended college at St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN, where he received his bachelor degree in Chemistry. He received his Ph.D in Biochemistry at St. Louis University, studying under Nobel Laureate, Edward A. Doisy. Theodore was professor of Biochemistry at Cornell Medical Center in New York City, and continued as professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska. He is survived by his wife Natalie Anne Chaffee Mahowald, seven children, and sixteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. After his youth in Minnesota, Theodore spent much of his life researching cancer, dedicated to his wife, and raising his children, with his later years spent in Omaha, Nebraska. After retirement, Natalie and he spent time in Tucson, Arizona as well as at the house they built in Sequim, Washington. He passed away surrounded by family and in his own home, as he wished. Theodore was an excellent and loving father, always present for his kids' formative years and attending key school and life events. A grandson, Austin Theodore Mahowald, and a great grandson Henry Theodore Luebbert honor his name. He is sorely missed by all who have known him.
