Owen Arthur Kelly, a devoted husband and father, passed away peacefully on May 2nd, 2025, surrounded by family. He was 84.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen of 61 years, his two sons and two daughters-in-law, Bret and his wife Tanja, and Bart and his wife Maja, his brother Don Kelly and his wife Julie, and his sister Loretta Short and her husband Dave, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Born on June 18, 1940, in Ree Heights, South Dakota, Owen moved with his family (parents and 4 siblings) to Bainbridge Island, Washington. Owen was baptized and later confirmed in the Christian faith at Port Madison Lutheran Church, Bainbridge Island, where he grew up with a deep appreciation for faith, hard work, friendships, and the Pacific Northwest. Owen married Maureen O’Neal in 1963.
In 1958, he began his career at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as an apprentice machinist. His dedication led him to Code 2340, where eventually he became the Chief Test Engineer on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, which had 8 nuclear reactors. He later served as Head of Shop 38, Group Superintendent of the Indoor / Outdoor Machine Group, and in Nuclear Refueling. He leaves a legacy of service.
Owen was a passionate participant in recreational sports with friends, an avid sailor, finding peace and joy on the open water, and writing poetry for friends and family, especially his wife. Owen was known for his quiet strength, sharp wit, and steady guidance, which touched everyone who knew him.
Owen will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to Christ, his family, his friends, and his remarkable career in naval nuclear engineering.
