It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Milo Hugh VanDecar, who died peacefully in his sleep at home on September 23, 2026, at the age of 87.
Milo was born in Port Townsend, Washington. He attended elementary school in Chimacum before his family relocated to Renton, where he graduated from Renton High School in 1959.
Immediately following high school, Milo began working in the restaurant industry, embarking on what would become a lifelong passion for the culinary arts. Later that same year, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served honorably as a culinary specialist aboard a submarine during the Vietnam War, completing his military service in California.
While in California, Milo continued to develop his culinary skills, working in several restaurants, including restaurants in San Francisco. It was there that he married Lyn. They eventually returned to Renton, Washington, where they began their family.
Milo continued to thrive in the restaurant industry, where his culinary talent, creativity, and leadership skills earned him the respect of his colleagues. He played an instrumental role in the extensive remodeling of a prominent local hotel, where he also served as head chef.
His love of cooking was matched by his passion for teaching and mentoring others. Milo earned his teaching credentials and went on to spend many rewarding years teaching culinary arts at Renton Vocational School. He took great pride in helping students develop their skills and discover their own passions.
In 1979, Milo returned to his roots in Port Townsend. Alongside his wife, Roberta “Bobbi,” he operated the Fort Worden Dining Hall while also owning and operating three other successful local restaurants. His dedication to the culinary arts and to the community left a lasting impression on the many people who knew and worked with him.
Beyond the kitchen, Milo was a man of many passions. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, a talented craftsman who always seemed to have a remodeling project underway, and an enthusiastic collector and admirer of antique cars. He was also deeply committed to his community and proudly dedicated his time to the Elks Club, and was a member of the Holland Club as well as the American Legion.
Milo will be remembered for his love of family, his dedication to his craft, his willingness to share his knowledge, and the many lives he touched throughout his career and in his community.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Roberta “Bobbi”; his four daughters, Anecia, Kimberly, Cynthia, and Michelle; his two stepchildren, Thomas and Donna; his sisters, Marge and Laura; 14 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Milo was loved by many, deeply respected by his peers, and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
An additional celebration of his life will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, with details to be announced at a later date.
