Frank Gilson Burns Sr. A Celebration of a Life Well Lived

We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Frank Gilson Burns Sr. on Friday, January 23, 2026, shortly before 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time. He passed after a long battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, surrounded by his sons.

Frank was born and raised in Houston, Texas. At the age of thirteen, he experienced the loss of his father, leaving his mother, Vera, to raise Frank and his older brother on a teacher’s salary. Witnessing his mother’s perseverance through hardship profoundly shaped Frank’s character, instilling in him a lifelong sense of responsibility, compassion, and generosity.

Frank developed a deep love of reading and demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for numbers. He was widely admired for his sharp intellect and remarkable ability to perform complex mental calculations. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Guided by his skills and values, Frank pursued one of Texas’s most iconic professions—that of an oil trader. Over the course of his career, he developed successful ventures around the world. His professional accomplishments afforded him extensive travel and many memorable adventures, all of which he shared with a wide circle of friends.

Although Frank was a veteran and a successful businessman, the role he cherished most was that of father. He often remarked that his four sons—Adam, Charlie, Tim, and Frank Jr.—were exceptional because he had been fortunate to marry two wonderful women.

Following the end of his marriage to Anne, the mother of Adam, Charlie, and Tim, and her subsequent relocation to Washington State, Frank made extraordinary efforts to remain closely connected to his sons. He traveled to Washington more than eighty times over the years and frequently brought the boys to Houston, ensuring that distance never diminished their bond. Together with his second wife, Ruth, Frank was equally committed to ensuring that Frank Jr. grew up knowing and forming strong relationships with his older brothers.

Frank was a man others could always rely upon. Despite a demanding career, he consistently made time for family and friends. To remain closer to his loved ones, he even built a second home in Washington State, allowing him to spend more time with his sons and grandchildren.

A firm believer in giving back, Frank was a founding trustee of the Carl McCain Memorial Foundation, an organization dedicated to assisting oil industry employees and their families with medical expenses. This work reflected his enduring commitment to supporting those who quietly serve others.

Frank touched countless lives and formed many enduring friendships. Those who knew him understood that he was truly one of a kind. He delighted in bringing people together—hosting lively crawfish boils and barbecues, golfing with family and friends, exploring the outdoors, running marathons, and dancing with joy. With Frank, a good time was always assured.

Family remained the center of Frank’s life. He regularly visited his grandmother until her passing at the age of 110. He maintained a close relationship with his older brother, Butch, often organizing large family gatherings along the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. Frank deeply adored his mother, Vera, and remained devoted to her until her death in 1996. His loyalty and generosity extended beyond immediate family—he paid hospital bills for Belle, the housekeeper he grew up with, and spent months simply being present with loved ones during their most difficult times. Frank always made time.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Burns, the mother of Frank G. Burns Jr.

He is survived by his four sons, Adam Burns (Estelle Giangrosso), Charlie Burns, Tim Burns (Andrea Burns), and Frank G. Burns Jr.; as well as his grandchildren, Isabela Burns, Jameson Burns (Arianna Burns), Alcyone Burns, Evan Burns, and Dylan Burns.

Frank Gilson Burns Sr. will be remembered for his intelligence, generosity, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to his family.

In accordance with his wishes, two wakes are planned. The first will be held at the Valley Tavern in Port Hadlock, Washington, on February 21, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. A second wake will be held at Luling City Market in Houston, Texas, at a later date to be announced.
